The Precipice Walk path above Llyn Cynwch near Dolgellau

Precipice Walk, Dolgellau

The Precipice Walk is a 5 km circuit round the slopes of Foel Cynwch north of Dolgellau. The National Park grades it moderate and allows about two hours. Despite the name it involves little climbing: the path keeps to a contour high above the Mawddach valley, then returns along the shore of Llyn Cynwch.

Where it starts

Start from the Saith Groesffordd car park near Llanfachreth, which has toilets; check their opening times before relying on them. Turn right from the car park sign, pass Gwern Offeiriad and go through the wood to open fields. The path follows an old stone wall lined with ancient oaks, then swings round the hill with views north over Coed y Brenin and down to the River Mawddach, before dropping to the lake and following its shore back to the start.

Underfoot

Paths are unsurfaced and mostly grassy across open countryside, with some steeper stretches and several gates through stone walls. The route stays at around 800 feet, with little climbing or descending.

When to take care

  • The route crosses the Nannau estate, which has allowed walkers since 1890 on condition that they keep to the route and follow the Countryside Code.
  • Walking boots and waterproof layers are recommended.
  • Keep dogs on a lead.

Distance: about 6 km (3 miles), round trip, measured along the line on the route map below.

The line is a guide to the route, not a substitute for a proper map. Carry an Ordnance Survey map, check the weather before you set off and allow plenty of time.
