Luggage Transfer in Wales

Walk or Ride Unburdened Through Some of Britain’s Most Beautiful Landscapes

There is a reason walkers and cyclists who travel with Drover Holidays keep coming back: they arrive at their accommodation each evening feeling exhilarated rather than exhausted. A big part of that is our luggage transfer service, which ensures your bags are waiting for you at the end of every day’s adventure, no matter how far you have walked or ridden.

Whether you are striding along the high ridges of the Brecon Beacons or pedalling through the quiet lanes of the Wye Valley, you should be free to take in every view, stop whenever you like, and enjoy the journey properly. A heavy pack on your back or panniers dragging on your wheels changes the nature of a holiday entirely. Our luggage transfer service removes that burden completely, and it is included as standard in all of our self-guided walking and cycling holidays.

How Our Luggage Transfer Works

The process is straightforward. Each morning, before you set off, you leave your main bag or bags at your accommodation. Our team then collects them and delivers them to your next night’s lodging, arriving well ahead of you so that everything is ready and waiting when you check in.

You carry only what you need for the day: a daysack with your waterproofs, a packed lunch, water, your route notes and whatever else you want close to hand. For walkers, this typically means a light rucksack of five to ten litres. For cyclists, it frees your bike of heavy panniers, making for easier climbing and a more comfortable, responsive ride.

We cover the full length and breadth of our touring routes, from the Pembrokeshire Coast in the west to the English border along Offa’s Dyke in the east, and from the Ceredigion coast in the north down through the Black Mountains and the Wye Valley to Chepstow in the south. If your route is one of ours, your luggage is in safe hands.

Included on All Self-Guided Holidays

Luggage transfer is not an add-on or an optional extra with Drover Holidays. It is built into the price of every self-guided walking and cycling holiday we offer. When you book with us, you are not just booking a route and some accommodation; you are booking a genuinely supported experience.

Our self-guided holidays already include:

  • Pre-booked accommodation in quality bed and breakfasts and guesthouses
  • Luggage transfer between each night’s accommodation
  • Detailed custom maps with your daily route highlighted
  • Comprehensive route guides with directions, background information and points of interest
  • Pick-up and drop-off at the nearest railway or bus station at the start and end of your tour
  • A first aid kit and, for cycling holidays, a handlebar bag, cycle computer, lock and water bottle

The luggage transfer ties all of this together. It is what makes a self-guided holiday feel truly supported, giving you the independence of travelling under your own steam while removing the logistical burden that can otherwise take the shine off an otherwise wonderful trip.

The Areas We Cover

Our luggage transfer service operates across all of our touring regions, covering a remarkable variety of Welsh and border landscapes.

The Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains The high ground of the Brecon Beacons National Park forms the heart of much of our walking and cycling programme. Routes like the Beacons Way traverse the spine of the national park from Llangadog to Abergavenny, crossing glaciated uplands, red sandstone ridges and the highest summit in southern Wales. Our Black Mountains Triangle cycling route and the Llanthony Priory walks explore the quieter eastern corners of the park, taking in the Gospel Pass, the ruins of Llanthony Abbey and the beautiful Olchon Valley. Luggage transfer operates throughout.

The Wye Valley From Chepstow in the south to the river’s source near Plynlimon in the north, the Wye Valley Walk passes through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, rich in woodland, wildlife and history. Cycling options like the Wye Valley Meander and the Heart of Wales route follow the river through Herefordshire’s orchards and into Mid Wales, with Hay-on-Wye sitting at the centre of it all. Our base is here, and we know these roads and footpaths intimately.

Mid Wales and Powys The rolling hills and wide skies of Powys offer some of the most peaceful long-distance cycling in Wales. Our Best of Mid Wales route loops through Presteigne, Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells, Brecon and Crickhowell. The Radnor Ring takes in some of the remotest countryside in Britain, with overnight stops in tiny villages well off the beaten track. The Landscapes of Powys route follows the Welsh borderlands south from Knighton to Hay and on to Builth Wells. All of these routes are fully supported with luggage transfer.

Offa’s Dyke The 177-mile Offa’s Dyke Path runs the full length of the Welsh border from Prestatyn in the north to Chepstow in the south, following the line of King Offa’s eighth-century defensive earthwork. It is one of Britain’s great long-distance walking challenges, and one of our most popular routes. We also offer shorter options, including an Introduction to Offa’s Dyke from Hay to Knighton, ideal for those who want a flavour of the path without committing to a fortnight of walking.

The Celtic Trail and South Wales The Celtic Trail cycling route crosses the south of Wales on a mixture of traffic-free paths and quiet lanes, passing through the former industrial valleys and a wealth of castle country. The Valleys and Castles route combines sections of the Celtic Trail with spectacular scenery, while the Taff Trail connects Brecon directly to the centre of Cardiff via the Taff Valley. Luggage transfer is available across all of these routes.

The Pembrokeshire Coast Our Pembrokeshire Coast Path holiday covers one of the most dramatic stretches of coastal walking in Britain, following the clifftop path along the entire Pembrokeshire peninsula. The scenery is exceptional throughout, with sea stacks, coves, headlands and wildlife at every turn. Given the linear nature of the route, luggage transfer is particularly important here, allowing you to walk point-to-point without the burden of carrying everything you need.

Ceredigion and West Wales The Ceredigion Coast Path follows the Cardigan Bay shoreline through one of Wales’s most unspoiled counties. Less-visited than Pembrokeshire, it offers a quieter experience of the Welsh coast, with dolphins regularly spotted offshore and the hills of the Cambrian Mountains providing a backdrop inland.

Why Luggage Transfer Makes Such a Difference

It is easy to underestimate how much difference travelling light makes until you have experienced it firsthand.

On a multi-day walking holiday, carrying a full pack changes your gait, increases fatigue and can cause discomfort that builds steadily over the course of a week. Knees, hips and shoulders all feel the cumulative effect of carrying twenty-odd kilograms over mountainous terrain. Without a bag on your back, you walk taller, cover ground more easily and arrive at the end of each day genuinely looking forward to tomorrow rather than dreading it.

On a cycling holiday, the difference is just as pronounced. A loaded bike handles differently, climbs heavily and is harder to control on descents. Riding with just a small daysack and a handlebar bag transforms the experience. You can tackle Welsh climbs with genuine pleasure rather than just survival instinct.

There is also a practical benefit when it comes to packing. Because your main bag travels by vehicle each day, you do not need to minimise ruthlessly. You can bring the things that make a trip comfortable, a warm mid-layer, a decent book, a change of clothes for the evening, without spending the day regretting it.

What to Pack in Your Daysack

While your main luggage travels ahead, you will want to carry a few essentials with you each day. As a general guide, we recommend:

  • Waterproofs (a jacket at minimum, overtrousers advised for walkers on exposed routes)
  • A warm mid-layer for high ground or breezy days
  • Your route notes and map for the day
  • Plenty of water and snacks
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • A fully charged mobile phone
  • Small first aid supplies and any personal medication
  • A camera or whatever you use to capture the scenery

For walking holidays, a daysack of around twenty to thirty litres is ideal. For cycling, a small rucksack or a saddlebag will usually suffice, and our hire bikes come with a handlebar bag as standard.

Luggage Transfer for Groups

Our luggage transfer service works just as well for groups as for individuals and couples. Whether you are travelling as a family, a group of friends or a club, we handle the logistics so that everyone can focus on the holiday itself. We are well practised at tailoring itineraries for groups of varying fitness levels and ages, and our luggage transfer operates in the same way regardless of group size.

If you are organising a charity walk along Offa’s Dyke, a corporate group cycling challenge or a social trip with a running club or walking group, get in touch to discuss the arrangements. We have plenty of experience supporting these kinds of events and can advise on everything from route selection to accommodation options.

A Note on Bag Sizes and Weights

To allow us to operate the transfer service efficiently and safely, we ask that each bag does not exceed 20kg in weight. Standard suitcases, wheeled bags and holdalls are all fine. We would ask that you avoid anything structurally awkward to handle, and please ensure your bags are clearly labelled with your name and the name of the next night’s accommodation, which we will confirm when you receive your booking information.

If you have any concerns about whether your luggage is suitable, just give us a ring. We would rather sort things out before you arrive than on the morning of your first walking day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Luggage Transfer

What time should I leave my bags out in the morning? We will provide specific instructions with your booking, but as a general rule bags should be ready to collect by 9am. We will collect them after you have set off for the day, so you will never need to wait around.

What if my bag arrives before I do? Your accommodation will look after your luggage until you check in. This is standard practice for all of the guesthouses and B&Bs we use, and they are well used to receiving bags ahead of their guests.

Can I send fragile or valuable items in my main bag? We take great care with every bag we transfer, but we recommend keeping valuables such as passports, travel documents and expensive electronics in your daysack with you, as you would travelling on any other form of transport.

What happens if I need to change my plans mid-route? Wales’ weather and walkers’ knees are both famously unpredictable. If you need to adjust your daily plan, contact us as early as possible and we will do our best to accommodate the change. This is one of the advantages of booking a supported holiday through a local operator rather than a large national company: we are genuinely flexible and approachable.

Is luggage transfer available if I bring my own bike? Yes. Luggage transfer is available to all self-guided holiday guests, regardless of whether you bring your own bike, hire one of ours or opt for one of our electric bike upgrades.
