Guided Walking Tours in Wales

Explore the Welsh Landscape with an Expert by Your Side

There is no better way to discover Wales than on foot, and there is no better way to walk Wales than with a guide who knows it intimately. Our guided walking tours take you through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Britain, with an experienced leader handling every detail of navigation, safety and local knowledge while you concentrate on enjoying the journey.

Whether you are looking for a half-day amble through the Black Mountains, a long weekend on the Beacons Way or a fully tailored multi-day expedition through the wilder corners of Mid Wales, Drover Holidays can put together a trip that fits your group, your fitness level and your interests.

What is a Guided Walking Tour?

On a guided walking tour, you are accompanied throughout the day by a qualified walk leader. There is no map-reading to worry about, no uncertainty about which path to take at a fork in the ridge, and no concern about what to do if the weather closes in or someone turns an ankle. Your guide takes care of all of that.

Beyond the practical reassurance, a good guide transforms the experience of a place. Our leaders know the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains, the Wye Valley and the wider Welsh borderlands in great depth. They can tell you why a particular hill has that distinctive shape, point out where a peregrine has been nesting, explain the history of a ruined farmstead on the hillside, or simply recommend the best pub for the end of the day. That extra layer of knowledge and companionship is what makes guided walking feel genuinely different to going it alone.

What is Included in a Guided Walking Tour?

Our guided walking tours are entirely tailormade, which means we can adjust the package to suit your group’s exact requirements. As a general guide, a fully supported multi-day tour includes:

  • A qualified, experienced guide accompanying you on the trail every day
  • Pick-up and drop-off at the nearest railway station at the start and end of your tour
  • Pre-booked accommodation in quality bed and breakfasts and guesthouses
  • A packed lunch every day, made using quality local ingredients
  • Luggage transfer between each night’s accommodation, so your bags are waiting for you at the end of every day
  • Full vehicle back-up throughout the tour, with a driver on hand to provide a lift if you need one

For shorter guided days, the package can be trimmed to whatever makes sense for your visit. Get in touch and we will talk through the options.

Our Guided Walking Routes

The Beacons Way

Our flagship guided walking route, the Beacons Way, is a spectacular high-level traverse of the Brecon Beacons National Park from Llangadog in Carmarthenshire to Abergavenny in Monmouthshire. The route covers around 100 miles over eight days, taking in the best of the national park: Roman ruins, medieval castles, a Norman abbey, the red sandstone escarpments of the central Beacons and the highest summit in the park, Pen y Fan.

This is a strenuous route, with significant daily ascent and some exposed ridge walking, but it is also one of the most rewarding walks in Wales. Having a guide alongside you makes an enormous difference on a route like this, particularly when cloud sits low on the summits and the paths become harder to follow. Your leader will pace the group well, ensure everyone feels confident and comfortable, and bring the landscape to life with stories, natural history and local knowledge that you simply would not find in a guidebook.

Tailormade Guided Walking Trips

Beyond the Beacons Way, we offer a huge range of tailormade guided walking experiences across our entire operating area. If you have a particular route, region or style of walking in mind, tell us about it and we will design something around your vision.

Some examples of the walks we regularly guide include:

The Black Mountains and Hay-on-Wye area — Our base in Hay sits right on the doorstep of the Black Mountains. From here, walks can take in the Gospel Pass, the Olchon Valley, Llanthony Priory, the dramatic ridgeline of the Hatterrall Ridge and a wide variety of quieter valleys and woodland tracks. This is ideal territory for shorter guided breaks of two to four days.

Offa’s Dyke and the Welsh borderlands — The ancient earthwork that marks the border between England and Wales offers some of the finest ridge walking in Britain, with long views in both directions from the high ground. Whether you want to walk the full 177-mile national trail or a shorter section, we can organise guided support along the route.

The Wye Valley — Following the River Wye from the Brecon Beacons down through Herefordshire and to the sea at Chepstow is one of the great Welsh walking experiences. The valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the woodland, wildlife and history along the river make for a richly varied guided walk.

The Brecon Beacons National Park — Beyond the Beacons Way, the national park offers almost limitless walking potential. We can guide day walks to Pen y Fan, Corn Du and the central summits, explore the quieter Fforest Fawr in the west or head into the limestone country around Ystradfellte with its remarkable waterfalls.

Pembrokeshire and the coast — For groups wanting sea air and clifftop scenery, we can organise guided sections of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, one of the finest coastal long-distance routes in Britain.

Who are our Guides?

Drover Holidays is owned and run by Luke Skinner and Anna Heywood-Skinner, who between them bring an extraordinary depth of outdoor experience to the business. Luke grew up in Brecon and has spent his life exploring the hills, valleys and trails of this part of Wales. Together, Luke and Anna have walked, cycled and travelled across Europe, South America and the length of Africa, giving them a perspective on guided travel and what makes a great outdoor experience that very few operators can match.

Our in-house team of qualified walking guides and mountain leaders is supplemented by a network of trusted local and freelance guides, which means we can cater for groups of almost any size. Every guide we use is qualified to the appropriate standard for the terrain and has the kind of deep local knowledge that only comes from years of walking these hills.

We are not a large national operator matching you to a generic tour group. We are a small, independent business built around genuine passion for this landscape, and that comes through in every guided walk we deliver.

Guided Walking for Groups

Guided walking works particularly well for groups, and it is one of the areas where we get most enquiries. Whether your group is a collection of friends who want to tackle a challenge walk together, a family looking for a structured multi-day adventure, a charity group fundraising with a sponsored walk, or a corporate team looking for something more meaningful than a day at a conference centre, we can design and lead a guided walking programme that works for you.

We are especially well placed to support charity challenge walks in the Brecon Beacons and along Offa’s Dyke, having organised and guided many of these events over the years. We understand the logistics involved, the varying fitness levels within a large group, and how to pace a day so that everyone finishes feeling proud rather than broken.

For walking groups with a specific interest, whether that is natural history, history and heritage, photography or simply the social pleasure of walking together, we can tailor the guiding approach accordingly. Ask us what you have in mind.

Dog-Friendly Guided Walks

We understand that for many people, the dog comes on holiday too. Wales is wonderfully dog-friendly in general, and much of our walking territory is open access land where dogs are perfectly welcome. If you are bringing a dog on a guided walk, let us know when you enquire and we will plan the route and accommodation accordingly.

Guided Walking or Self-Guided: Which is Right for You?

Some people arrive already knowing that they want a guide. Others are less certain. Here is a simple way to think about it.

If you are very confident with navigation, happy to read a map in poor visibility, travelling as a couple or small group of experienced walkers and want maximum flexibility, a self-guided holiday is probably the right choice. We provide detailed route notes, custom maps and full luggage transfer, and you have total freedom over your daily pace and plan.

If you prefer company, want expert navigation taken care of, are walking in a larger group, want someone to interpret the landscape for you, or simply want the peace of mind of having a qualified leader alongside you, a guided tour is the better fit. It is also the right choice if your group includes people of varying experience or confidence, or if you are tackling more serious mountain terrain.

Many of our guests try both over the years, and find they enjoy each for different reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions About Guided Walking Tours

How fit do I need to be? We tailor every guided tour to the group, so the answer depends on the route you choose. We offer everything from gentle valley walks to strenuous mountain days. When you get in touch, tell us about your group’s general fitness and experience and we will suggest routes that are a good match.

How many people can you guide? Our tailormade guided walks can be arranged for individuals, couples and groups of all sizes. For larger groups, we draw on our network of local freelance guides to ensure the right ratio of leaders to walkers.

Are the guides first-aid trained? Yes. All of our guides hold appropriate first-aid qualifications, and the vehicle back-up provides an additional safety net for any emergencies on the hill.

Can you guide walks for people with limited mobility or particular health considerations? Please get in touch and let us know the specifics. We will always do our best to find a suitable option, and there is a lot of wonderful walking in our area that does not involve steep or technical terrain.

Do I need to book in advance? For multi-day tours, we recommend booking as early as possible to allow time for accommodation to be secured and the itinerary to be planned properly. For day walks, we can sometimes accommodate bookings at shorter notice, but please call rather than assuming availability.
