Guided Cycling Tours in Wales

Discover Wales by Bike, with an Expert Leading the Way

Cycling is one of the finest ways to explore Wales. You cover more ground than on foot, but still travel slowly enough to notice the details: the peregrine circling above a limestone escarpment, the smell of wild garlic in a shaded lane, the distant glitter of a reservoir tucked between hills. On a guided cycling tour with Drover Holidays, you get all of that, plus a knowledgeable guide, a fully supported experience and the company of a small group of like-minded people.

Our guided cycling tours take in some of the best cycling terrain in Britain, from the traffic-free trails of the Taff Valley to the remote lanes of the Radnor Hills and the epic length of Lon Las Cymru, Wales’s great north-to-south cycle route. Whether you are an experienced tourer looking for your next challenge or a leisure cyclist stepping up to a multi-day adventure for the first time, we have a guided tour to suit you.

What is a Guided Cycling Tour?

On a guided cycling tour, you ride as part of a small group accompanied by a qualified cycle leader throughout the day. Groups are kept deliberately small, typically between four and eight riders, which means the pace, the stops and the experience can be adjusted to suit the group rather than being driven by the needs of a large crowd.

Your guide handles all route-finding, so there is no need to study a map at every junction or worry about taking a wrong turn onto a busy road. They will also manage any mechanical issues that arise on the road, carry tools and spares, and ensure that nobody is left struggling at the back. Beyond the practical support, a good guide adds real depth to the experience, sharing knowledge about the places you are riding through and making sure the day feels like an adventure rather than a logistics exercise.

The vehicle back-up that accompanies every guided cycling tour is a particular reassurance for riders who are not sure how their legs will hold up over several consecutive days. The support vehicle is there if you need a lift for a section, and it carries your luggage between accommodations so your bike is never weighed down with bags.

What is Included in a Guided Cycling Tour?

Every guided cycling tour with Drover Holidays includes:

  • A qualified, experienced cycling guide accompanying you throughout
  • Pick-up and drop-off at the nearest railway or bus station at the start and end of the tour
  • Pre-booked accommodation in quality bed and breakfasts and guesthouses
  • A tasty packed lunch every day, made using quality local ingredients
  • Luggage transfer between accommodations, so your bags are at the next night’s lodging when you arrive
  • Full vehicle back-up throughout the tour
  • A comfortable hire bike for the duration of the tour, or the option to upgrade to one of our top-of-the-range electric bikes

If you prefer to bring your own bike, that is absolutely fine. Just let us know when you book and we will ensure the support vehicle has space for it.

Our Guided Cycling Routes

Lon Las Cymru: The Big One

Lon Las Cymru is Wales’s great end-to-end cycle route, running from Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey to Chepstow or Cardiff in the south. The route covers between 236 and 254 miles depending on the finishing point, spread over ten nights of riding, and it is one of the most rewarding long-distance cycling journeys in Britain.

The route takes in an extraordinary variety of Welsh landscape. You begin on the low-lying island of Anglesey before climbing into the heart of Snowdonia, then descend to the coast and push south through the mountains of Mid Wales, following forest tracks and quiet lanes through some of the emptiest countryside in the country. As you approach the south, the landscape becomes more populous and the route weaves through the Valleys before reaching the sea.

Lon Las Cymru is graded strenuous. There is significant climbing involved on several days, and consecutive days in the saddle will test your endurance as well as your legs. Having a guide means you have someone experienced in pacing a group through a challenge like this, ensuring that every rider finishes the journey rather than running out of steam in Mid Wales.

The Radnor Ring

The Radnor Ring is a hidden gem of Welsh cycling. A four-night circular route beginning and ending in Newbridge-on-Wye, it explores some of the most remote and beautiful countryside in Wales, staying close to the ancient Radnor Forest and the rolling hills of the Welsh marches.

The route is hilly throughout, with overnight stops in Gladestry, Kington and the tiny village of Abbey-cwm-hir. This is true get-away-from-it-all cycling, on lanes that see very little traffic and through communities that most visitors to Wales never reach. If you want to feel like you have genuinely discovered something, the Radnor Ring is the tour for you.

A guide makes a real difference on this route. The lanes of Radnorshire are not always well signposted, and navigating the network of minor roads without local knowledge can be frustrating. With a guide at the front, you simply follow and enjoy.

The Taff Trail

The Taff Trail is one of Wales’s most popular cycling routes for good reason. Following disused railway lines and traffic-free trails from Brecon or Hay-on-Wye to the centre of Cardiff, it is accessible, scenic and enormously varied. The route has only one significant climb, making it one of the more approachable options for riders who are newer to multi-day touring.

The trail passes through the heart of the Brecon Beacons before dropping into the Taff Valley and following the river south through the former industrial communities of the South Wales Valleys. There is fascinating industrial heritage along the way, including viaducts, ironworks and the remnants of the canal system, alongside the natural beauty of the Taff Gorge and the upland sections of the national park.

The guided version of the Taff Trail runs over two or three nights, making it an ideal introduction to guided cycling holidays for those who are not yet ready to commit to a longer tour.

Electric Cycling Tours

All of our guided cycling tours can be completed on one of our top-of-the-range electric bikes. The electric bike option is particularly worth considering on longer or more challenging routes like Lon Las Cymru, where the daily climbing is significant, but it is available on all of our tours regardless of the terrain.

Riding on electric assistance does not diminish the experience. You still cover the same ground, breathe the same air and see the same views. What changes is the ratio of effort to enjoyment, which for many riders is exactly the right trade. It also means that couples or groups of mixed fitness can ride together more comfortably, with the assisted riders keeping pace without struggling.

If you are curious about electric cycling and want to talk through whether it is right for your tour, give us a call. We are enthusiasts, and we are happy to talk through the options honestly.

Who are our Cycling Guides?

Drover Holidays was founded by Luke Skinner and Anna Heywood-Skinner, whose credentials as cyclists are, to put it mildly, hard to match. In 2004, they set out to cycle from the United Kingdom to South Africa, covering 30,000 kilometres over 615 days before arriving in Cape Town in April 2006. That expedition, which took them through Europe, East Africa and the length of the continent, gave them a deep understanding of long-distance cycling, the challenges of multi-day touring and what it takes to support a group of riders through a demanding journey.

Luke grew up in Brecon and has been riding the roads, lanes and trails of Mid Wales his entire life. The cycling routes we offer are not chosen from a map; they are routes our team knows intimately from years of riding, walking and exploring this landscape. When a guide on a Drover Holidays tour tells you there is a tremendous view around the next corner, they are speaking from experience.

Our guiding team is fully qualified and experienced. For larger groups, we draw on a network of local freelance guides who share our knowledge of the area and our commitment to delivering an excellent experience.

Guided Cycling for Groups

Small groups and large groups are equally welcome on our guided cycling tours. For parties of more than eight riders, we bring in additional guides from our freelance network to ensure the right level of support and to keep the group manageable on the road.

We are experienced in organising guided cycling challenges for charity groups, corporate parties, club events and special occasions. If your group has a particular goal, whether that is completing Lon Las Cymru for a fundraising challenge or celebrating a milestone birthday on the Taff Trail, we will design the experience around your objectives.

Mixed-ability groups are something we handle regularly. With a support vehicle always close by and guides experienced in managing groups at different speeds, nobody needs to feel left behind or held back. Riders who need a break can hop in the vehicle for a stretch, while stronger riders can push on and wait at the next stop.

Guided Cycling or Self-Guided: Which Should You Choose?

If you are a confident navigator, comfortable with basic bike maintenance and happy to travel at your own pace without a set group, a self-guided cycling holiday offers maximum flexibility. You choose your departure date, follow your own map and route notes, and have luggage transfer and vehicle back-up available without being tied to a group dynamic.

If you would rather not think about navigation, want the social experience of riding with others, prefer to have a qualified leader on hand for safety and mechanical support, or are tackling a longer or more demanding route for the first time, a guided tour is the better option. It also works well when the group includes riders of different abilities, as the guide can pace and manage the day in a way that works for everyone.

Many of our guests come back year after year, alternating between guided and self-guided trips depending on who they are travelling with and what kind of experience they are after.

Frequently Asked Questions About Guided Cycling Tours

Do I need to be a serious cyclist to join a guided tour? Not at all, though you should be comfortable in the saddle and able to manage consecutive days of moderate cycling. When you enquire, tell us about your cycling background and we will make sure the route we suggest is appropriate.

Can I bring my own bike? Yes. If you prefer to ride your own bike, we will ensure the support vehicle has space for it. Just let us know when you book.

What happens if my bike breaks down? Your guide carries basic tools and spares and is trained in roadside repairs. The support vehicle is also always close by if a more significant problem arises or if a rider needs to be picked up.

Are the tour routes entirely traffic-free? Our routes use a mix of traffic-free trails, quiet lanes and occasionally busier roads. We choose routes with as little traffic as possible, and your guide will brief you on any sections where extra care is needed.

What is the minimum age for a guided cycling tour? We welcome younger riders on appropriate routes, particularly on the Taff Trail, which is well suited to families. Get in touch and tell us about your group and we will advise on the best fit.

Is electric bike hire available on all guided tours? Yes. Electric bikes are available on all of our guided cycling tours. Please request this when booking as availability is limited.
