Four Castles

About the Area

This gentle, family-friendly cycling break links four of the finest medieval castles in Monmouthshire, all within easy, short-distance reach of a single base in Abergavenny. It is a wonderful introduction to self-guided cycling holidays, mixing genuine history with quiet country lanes and plenty of time to stop along the way, whether that is exploring a castle ruin properly or simply pausing for a cream tea in one of the area’s welcoming village cafes.

Abergavenny itself, often described as the gateway to Wales, is the natural starting point, with its own castle ruins and small museum well worth a look before setting off. From here, quiet lanes lead out into the rolling Monmouthshire countryside towards the celebrated Three Castles of Gwent, Skenfrith, Grosmont and White Castle, together forming one of the best-preserved and most evocative clusters of Norman castles anywhere in Britain.

These three castles were built in the years following the Norman Conquest to secure this contested stretch of border country, and were later brought together under a single lordship, becoming known simply as the Three Castles. Grosmont retains its crumbling walls and distinctive rounded gatehouse, Skenfrith occupies a beautiful spot within a loop of the River Monnow, and White Castle, the grandest survivor of the three, boasts an impressive stone-lined moat and imposing curtain walls.

The lanes connecting them wind gently through classic Monmouthshire scenery, hedgerows, small vineyards and cider orchards, with barely a main road in sight, making this a genuinely relaxed ride suitable for families and less experienced cyclists alike. Short daily distances mean there is always plenty of time to properly explore each castle, or simply enjoy the surrounding countryside at an unhurried pace.

For anyone looking for an easy, rewarding taste of self-guided cycling in Wales, without the commitment of a longer tour, Four Castles offers a genuinely satisfying short break, real medieval history, beautiful quiet countryside, and short enough daily distances to make it a pleasure rather than a challenge.
